Boston Custom House

The Boston Custom House, a historic neoclassical building established in 1849, is located on State Street near the waterfront. Originally serving as a customs facility since the 17th century, the current structure features a striking Greek Revival design with a dome and 36 fluted Doric columns, each weighing 42 tons. It played a crucial role in maritime trade and duty collection during the age of clipper ships. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated a Boston Landmark in 1986, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in Boston's rich maritime history.
