39 Commissioner Street

39 Commissioner Street, originally built in 1928 as a firehall by the Toronto Harbour Commission, played a key role in attracting industrial enterprises to the Toronto Port Lands. Now recognized as a heritage structure, it has transitioned through various uses, including serving as a dog-walking agency in 2019. As part of a significant redevelopment plan for the Port Lands, the building is set to be relocated and raised to mitigate flood risks. The new development will feature offices and residential buildings on an artificial island, while preserving the cultural heritage of the fire hall, which was designed in the Edwardian Classicism style by J.J. Woolnough. The city also plans to incorporate public washrooms into the building post-redevelopment, making it a unique point of interest for visitors and researchers alike.
