City Hall IRT Station (abandoned subway station)

The original IRT City Hall station, known for its Guastavino-tiled arches and skylights, opened in 1904 as part of New York's first subway line. It was closed to regular passenger service in 1945 because newer, longer trains could not turn on the loop while serving other stations efficiently. The station remains largely intact and is occasionally opened to the public on special tours organized by the New York Transit Museum. The ornate station is beneath City Hall and is considered one of the city's most famous abandoned transit spaces.
