Emancipation Memorial (Freedman's Memorial) in Lincoln Park

The Emancipation Memorial, sculpted by Thomas Ball and dedicated in 1876, depicts President Abraham Lincoln standing over a kneeling formerly enslaved man and was installed in Lincoln Park. The bronze-and-marble monument has been the subject of public debate and calls for contextualization and reinterpretation in recent years. It remains a historic example of 19th-century commemorative public sculpture on Capitol Hill.
