Comet Ping Pong and the Pizzagate armed intrusion

On December 4, 2016, Edgar Maddison Welch entered Comet Ping Pong and fired a rifle inside the restaurant's basement door while attempting to investigate the debunked 'Pizzagate' conspiracy theory that had circulated online. No one inside the restaurant was injured; Welch surrendered to police and was later sentenced in federal court. The incident grew out of viral internet conspiracy content and became a widely reported example of online misinformation leading to real-world actions. The event and the underlying conspiracy theory spawned numerous online posts and memes referencing the restaurant.
