Laurel Hill Cemetery removal and reinterment

Laurel Hill Cemetery once occupied the Lone Mountain area of San Francisco but was ordered cleared beginning in the early 20th century as part of city efforts to remove urban cemeteries. Human remains and monuments were disinterred and relocated, largely to cemeteries in Colma, and the cemetery grounds were redeveloped. The former Laurel Hill site is now part of the University of San Francisco campus and surrounding neighborhoods. The removal of Laurel Hill is a documented example of San Francisco's large-scale relocation of cemeteries.
