Gas Works Park (adaptive reuse of a former gasification plant)

Gas Works Park occupies a former Seattle Gas Light Company coal gasification plant site on Lake Union and preserves rusted industrial structures as sculptural elements within the park. Designed by landscape architect Richard Haag and opened in 1975, the site is widely cited as an early example of adaptive reuse and industrial-landscape reclamation in the United States. The park includes a play hill, picnic areas, and panoramic views of downtown Seattle across the lake.
