Dave MacDonald and Eddie Sachs killed in fiery Indy 500 crash (1964)

On May 30, 1964, a violent multi-car crash on the first lap of the Indianapolis 500 killed drivers Dave MacDonald and Eddie Sachs at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. MacDonald's car struck the inside wall and burst into flames; Sachs' car then collided with MacDonald’s burning car, resulting in fatal injuries to both drivers. The crash prompted safety changes in fuel tank design and car construction in subsequent years. The incident is widely reported in historical accounts of the race.
