Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden - Circular modernist landmark for contemporary art

Donated by collector Joseph H. Hirshhorn, the Hirshhorn Museum houses modern and contemporary art in a distinctive cylindrical building designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The museum building and its adjoining outdoor Sculpture Garden opened in 1974 as part of the Smithsonian Institution. The Hirshhorn is known for presenting large-scale contemporary exhibitions and for commissioning site-specific installations by international artists.
