Underground World Home

The Underground World Home was a unique exhibit at the 1964 New York World's Fair, designed by architect Jay Swayze as a partially underground house and bomb shelter. Located in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, this innovative model featured ten rooms, backlit murals to simulate outdoor views, and robust construction meant to withstand potential threats during the Cold War. Despite its intriguing design and the promise of safety and comfort, the home struggled to attract visitors and was ultimately dismantled after the fair. It remains a fascinating piece of architectural history, reflecting the era's anxieties and aspirations.
