Currency Building

The Currency Building, located in the heart of Kolkata's B. B. D. Bagh district, is a historic 19th-century structure originally built in 1833 for the Agra Bank. It later served as the Office of the Issue and Exchange of Government Currency during the British Raj and was the first central office of the Reserve Bank of India from 1935 to 1937. After facing demolition in the 1990s, it was saved by conservation efforts and renovated by the Archaeological Survey of India, reopening as a museum in January 2020. The building features an Italianate design with marble and sandstone interiors, and its central hall has been transformed into an open-air event space, making it a significant cultural landmark for tourists and researchers alike.
