Star-Spangled Banner (largest surviving early American flag)

The Star-Spangled Banner flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814 is part of the Smithsonian’s collection and is displayed at the National Museum of American History. The flag measures approximately 30 by 34 feet and is the largest known surviving American flag from the War of 1812 era. Conservators have treated and stabilized the banner for long-term display and the object is central to the museum's exhibitions about the War of 1812 and the anthem inspired by the flag.
