Walnut Street Prison

Walnut Street Prison, operational from 1790 to 1838 in Philadelphia, was the first penitentiary in the United States, designed to promote solitary confinement as a means of rehabilitation. It was notable for its unique architecture, featuring individual cells, and for being the site of the first manned balloon flight in the Western Hemisphere by Jean-Pierre Blanchard in 1793, witnessed by prominent figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Despite its innovative approach, the prison struggled with overcrowding and poor conditions, leading to significant psychological effects on inmates. Notable prisoners included Ann Carson, who attempted to kidnap the Governor, and Patrick Lyon, who was wrongfully imprisoned.
