National Christmas Tree (White House Ellipse)

The National Christmas Tree lighting on the Ellipse in President’s Park began in 1923 when President Calvin Coolidge lit the first outdoor tree near the White House, initiating an annual public tradition. Each year a designated tree and surrounding holiday displays are installed on the Ellipse and illuminated in a national ceremony featuring musical performances and official guests. The site and ceremony are managed as part of the White House and National Park Service holiday programming.
