Cliveden (Chew House) - site of the Battle of Germantown action

Cliveden, also known as the Chew House, was the Philadelphia-area mansion of Chief Justice Benjamin Chew and became a focal point during the October 4, 1777, Battle of Germantown when British troops held the stone house against attacking American forces. The building and grounds retain physical evidence and documentary records of the battle and early federal-period occupancy. Cliveden is preserved as a National Historic Landmark and museum interpreting both Benjamin Chew's role in colonial Pennsylvania and the Revolutionary War engagement.
