Croatian Fraternal Union Building

The Croatian Fraternal Union Building, located in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, served as the headquarters for the Croatian Fraternal Union, the oldest and largest Croatian organization in North America. Designed in the Flemish Gothic Revival style by architect Pierre A. Liesch and completed in 1929, the building was a significant cultural site for Croatian Americans, featuring an auditorium and meeting hall. After serving various functions over the decades, including housing health department facilities, it was acquired by the University of Pittsburgh in 2018. Despite efforts to preserve its historic elements, the building was ultimately demolished in 2022, marking the end of an era for a structure that symbolized the Croatian community's heritage and contributions in the region.
