Library of Congress - Jefferson's personal library

In 1815 the Library of Congress purchased Thomas Jefferson's personal library of 6,487 volumes after the original congressional collection was destroyed in the War of 1812. Jefferson's books formed the nucleus of the expanded national collection and influenced the Library's subject organization. The Jefferson Collection remains catalogued and accessible as a distinct historical assembly within the Library of Congress.
