Unconditional Surrender (the 'kissing statue')

A large-scale bronze sculpture by Seward Johnson based on Alfred Eisenstaedt's V-J Day in Times Square photograph, commonly called "Unconditional Surrender" or the "kissing statue," is installed on the San Diego Embarcadero adjacent to the USS Midway Museum. The work is a frequently photographed piece of public art visible from the museum's waterfront area. The sculpture has attracted both popular attention and public debate about its depiction and interpretation.
