Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church and burial ground

Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church at 419 South 6th Street is the founding church of the AME denomination, established by Richard Allen in 1794. The site includes a historic church building and an adjacent burial ground containing graves of early African American congregants and leaders. Situated on an ordinary downtown block rather than a grand plaza, the church and its burial ground are easy for casual visitors to miss amid Independence National Historical Park attractions.
