Great Molasses Flood tank collapse

On January 15, 1919, a Purity Distilling Company molasses storage tank at this site burst, releasing an estimated 2.3 million gallons of molasses into the North End. The wave of molasses killed 21 people and injured roughly 150. The flood demolished buildings and infrastructure in the immediate area and prompted a lengthy civil suit in which the company was found liable.
