Shields Woolen Mill

Shields Woolen Mill, located along the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa, is a historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. Established in 1863 by Joseph Shields during the Civil War, the mill capitalized on the increased demand for wool, becoming the sixth largest industry in Davenport by 1870. Despite facing challenges, including fires and financial issues, it expanded to employ 140 people in the 1890s, producing a variety of woolen goods. The mill's architectural features include a two-story brick structure with segmental arch windows, making it one of the oldest steam-operated industrial buildings still standing in the area. Today, it has been repurposed into commercial and office space known as One River Place, offering visitors a glimpse into Davenport's industrial past.
