San Antonio River Walk's below-street-level urban channel

The San Antonio River Walk is a landscaped network of pedestrian walkways that runs along the banks of the San Antonio River one story below the surrounding downtown street level. Its current below-street design was implemented after the catastrophic 1921 flood as part of an engineered flood-control and civic-revival project. The River Walk creates an urban corridor where commercial and public spaces directly abut a maintained river channel through the city center.
