Scollay Square razed for Government Center

Scollay Square was a lively 19th- and early-20th-century commercial and entertainment district in downtown Boston. As part of a large urban renewal project in the late 1950s and early 1960s, most of Scollay Square's buildings were demolished to make way for Government Center. The redevelopment included the construction of Boston City Hall and accompanying civic buildings, permanently altering the area's street layout and urban fabric.
