Kimball Castle

Kimball Castle, once the summer estate of railroad magnate Benjamin Ames Kimball, is perched on a hill overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee in Gilford, New Hampshire. Built in 1894 with local granite and European materials, the medieval-style castle served as a luxurious retreat until Kimball's death in 1920. Following a series of legal and financial challenges, the estate was entrusted to the town of Gilford in 1981, which has since managed the surrounding conservation land. Unfortunately, the castle suffered a devastating fire in 2025, leading to its classification as a total loss. While the castle is no longer accessible to the public, the remaining conservation land offers hiking trails and scenic views, making it a point of interest for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
