La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club

La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club was founded by Ellen Stewart in 1961 at 74A East 4th Street and is dedicated to experimental and international theater. The organization has premiered early works by many playwrights and directors who later gained wider recognition and continues to operate multiple performance spaces and artist-residency programs. La MaMa is widely regarded as a foundational incubator of Off-Off-Broadway and avant-garde performance in New York City.
