Fort Guijarros (Ballast Point)

Fort Guijarros was a Spanish battery constructed in 1796–1797 to guard the entrance to San Diego Bay. The fort was largely demolished in the 19th century, but historic accounts and archaeological investigations have identified its approximate foundations and artifacts near Ballast Point. A historical plaque and interpretive signage at Ballast Point Park mark the site and summarize the fort’s role in colonial-era coastal defense. The site is documented in San Diego historic records and local maritime histories.
