Woodlawn (Ellicott City, Maryland)

Woodlawn, also known as Papillon, is a historic manor home located in Ellicott City, Maryland. Built by Thomas Beale Dorsey, the estate features unique architectural elements, including two entrances designed to bypass tolls. It served as a residence for various families from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, including the Rodgers family and later Dorsey Williams. In the 1970s, the estate was transformed into a country inn and a French restaurant, Pauvre Papillon. Despite its historical significance, Woodlawn was ultimately demolished in 1995 to make way for a townhouse development, highlighting the challenges of preserving historic sites amidst urban development. This site reflects the rich history of the area and the ongoing tension between preservation and progress.
