1954 U.S. House of Representatives shooting from the gallery

On March 1, 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists entered the visitors' gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives and opened fire, wounding five Congressmen. The attackers were subdued and arrested at the scene and later convicted in federal court. The incident prompted increased security measures for access to the House chamber and remains a noted act of political violence in Capitol history.
