Mark Hopkins Hotel and Top of the Mark (Nob Hill landmark)

The Mark Hopkins Hotel opened on Nob Hill in 1926 on the former site of the Mark Hopkins mansion destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. Its 19th-floor lounge, Top of the Mark, opened in 1939 and became famous as a panoramic vantage point and social space; during World War II it was known as a gathering place for servicemembers and their families. The hotel is a longstanding luxury landmark in San Francisco with historical associations to the city's post‑earthquake rebuilding and hospitality history.
