1962 Alcatraz escape of Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers

On June 11, 1962, inmates Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin escaped from the federal prison on Alcatraz Island by chiseling through cell walls, climbing through a utility corridor, and launching a homemade raft. The three disappeared into San Francisco Bay and were never conclusively found; the U.S. Marshals Service lists them as missing and presumed drowned, but subsequent reports and occasional claimed sightings have kept their fate disputed. The escape prompted a major manhunt and remains one of the most famous unresolved prison escapes in U.S. history.
