de Young Museum and Michael H. de Young

The de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park is named for Michael H. de Young, co-founder of the San Francisco Chronicle. The museum traces its institutional origins to the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition and was later developed into the city's principal fine arts institution bearing de Young's name. The current building, opened in 2005, houses collections of American art, textiles, and works from the Americas, Africa, and Oceania.
