Poplar Rural District

The Poplar Rural District, located north of Jacksonville, Iowa, is a nationally recognized historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1992. This area features 55 resources, including 29 contributing buildings such as houses, barns, and outbuildings, all reflecting the heritage of the largest rural settlement of Danish immigrants in the United States. Visitors can explore the unique landscape shaped by these immigrants, who often built their farmsteads on sheltered hillsides. The district's significance spans from the construction of the original Jackson #1 schoolhouse in 1884 to the second schoolhouse completed in 1923, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural history of the region.
