Mansion House Hospital

Mansion House Hospital, located in Alexandria, Virginia, was a significant Union hospital during the American Civil War, established in 1861 in the former Mansion House Hotel. Originally a prominent hotel, it was repurposed to accommodate up to 700 soldiers as patients. The hospital was notable for employing female nurses, which contributed to the evolving role of women in the medical field. After the war, it returned to its hotel roots but faced decline, leading to its demolition in the 1970s, despite some preservation efforts. The site is now part of Carlyle House Historic Park, and the hospital's legacy continues to be reflected in literature and media, including the PBS miniseries 'Mercy Street' and the novel 'Night Watch.'
