Black Horse Tavern (Old Saybrook, Connecticut)

The Black Horse Tavern, built around 1712 by John Burrows, is a historic tavern located at 175 North Cove Road in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. This 2+1⁄2-story timber-framed structure is one of the few surviving buildings from the early 18th century in the state. Positioned near the mouth of the Connecticut River, it served as a vital stop for shipbuilders and travelers during its operational years until 1924. The tavern features a charming facade with a gabled roof, original vertical board door, and a distinctive half-round fanlight. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, making it a notable site for tourists and researchers interested in colonial history and architecture.
