The Star-Spangled Banner (original flag) in the Rubenstein Gallery

The original Star-Spangled Banner-the 30-by-34-foot flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814 and inspired the U.S. national anthem-is preserved by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and exhibited in the David M. Rubenstein Gallery. The flag underwent lengthy conservation and is exhibited under controlled lighting and environmental conditions; it is periodically rotated out of display for preservation and research. Because of its conservation needs and exhibition schedule, opportunities to see the original flag in person can be limited.
