South Station (transportation hub)

South Station opened in 1899 and serves as the primary intermodal transportation hub for Boston, handling Amtrak intercity trains (including Acela), MBTA Commuter Rail, the Red Line subway, and regional/intercity buses. It is the busiest rail station in New England by passenger volume and has undergone major renovations to modernize concourses and pedestrian connections. The station sits atop an active freight and rail corridor and connects directly to downtown destinations via pedestrian tunnels and street-level access.
