Rothko Chapel - site-specific modern sacred space

The Rothko Chapel, founded by John and Dominique de Menil and opened in 1971, is an ecumenical chapel that contains fourteen large murals painted by Mark Rothko specifically for the space. The non-denominational chapel was conceived as a contemplative, public space and is frequently cited for the integration of art and architecture in a site-specific manner. It remains a widely visited example of late 20th-century sacred modernist architecture in Houston.
