Old U.S. Mint 'only building left standing' exaggeration

The Old U.S. Mint at 88 5th Street, nicknamed the 'Granite Lady,' famously survived the 1906 earthquake and fires and protected its bullion, which contributed to its legendary status. It is sometimes described as the only building left standing in downtown San Francisco after the disaster, but historical evidence shows other buildings also survived in varying conditions and the claim is an exaggeration. The Old Mint is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is preserved as a historic site.
