United Nations Headquarters - Eleanor Roosevelt and the UDHR

The United Nations Headquarters at this site in Manhattan served as the principal location where the UN General Assembly and its commissions met after the UN established its permanent headquarters in New York in the late 1940s. Eleanor Roosevelt chaired the UN Commission on Human Rights and played a leading role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which the UN General Assembly adopted in 1948. Her leadership in that commission and the adoption of the Declaration are well-documented milestones in postwar international diplomacy.
