Roaring Judy Hatchery

Located in Almont, Colorado, the Roaring Judy Hatchery is a key facility for cold water fish production, renowned for hosting the largest kokanee salmon run in the U.S. Established in 1963, its mission focuses on preserving cutthroat trout, including a unique genetic line rescued after the Hayden Pass Wildfire. The hatchery produces over 3 million kokanee salmon fry and various trout species annually, utilizing groundwater sources for its operations. Salmon are released into the East River at night to enhance survival rates, returning after nearly four years to spawn, showcasing a remarkable natural instinct for navigation.
