Washington Monument aluminum capstone

The monument's apex is a cast aluminum pyramidion set in 1884; the capstone weighed about 100 ounces (roughly 2.8 kg) and was, at the time, the largest single piece of aluminum ever cast. Aluminum was then a relatively rare metal and the choice was noted as a technological novelty. The capstone sits at the Monument's peak and is a documented part of its construction history.
