Howard Hughes' Desert Inn purchase

Aviation magnate and financier Howard Hughes moved to Las Vegas in the mid-1960s and purchased the Desert Inn in 1967. He lived in the hotel for periods and used his Las Vegas acquisitions to build a corporate hotel portfolio. Hughes' ownership is widely cited as a turning point toward corporate control of major Las Vegas resorts and away from direct organized-crime management.
