Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World)

The Statue of Liberty, sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with engineering by Gustave Eiffel, was dedicated on Liberty Island on October 28, 1886 as a gift from France. The 151-foot statue (from base to torch) and its pedestal serve as a national monument administered by the National Park Service; visitors may access the island by ferry and, subject to security and ticketing, enter the statue and climb to the crown. The statue's copper exterior has oxidized to a green patina over time, a well-documented chemical phenomenon.
