Chamounix (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

Chamounix is a historic Federal-style house located in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, built in 1802 by merchant George Plumsted. Enlarged after 1853, this 2½-story stuccoed stone dwelling features a hipped roof, dormers, and a charming porch. Once a country retreat, it became part of Fairmount Park in 1869 and has served various purposes, including a boarding house and restaurant. After years of neglect, it was saved from demolition and has operated as an international youth hostel since 1964. Chamounix was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, making it a notable destination for tourists and researchers interested in history and architecture.
