Washington Monument (Robert Mills design, completed 1884)

The Washington Monument, whose initial design was by Robert Mills, is an obelisk of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss completed in 1884 after construction began in 1848 and was interrupted by funding shortfalls and the Civil War. It stands 555 feet 5 1/8 inches tall and for many years was the world's tallest predominantly stone structure and tallest obelisk. The monument was damaged in the 2011 Virginia earthquake and reopened to the public in 2019 after repairs.
