Inverailort House

Inverailort House, located south of Lochailort at the head of Loch Ailort, is a historic mansion that has served various purposes over the years. Originally a shooting lodge for the MacDonald of Clanranald, it was enlarged in 1828 by Major General Sir Alexander Cameron. The house has a rich history, including its use during World War II as a training base for the Special Operations Executive, where British agents learned intelligence and sabotage techniques. Notably, actor David Niven was among those trained there. The mansion is now in a ruinous state, but its past, including the poignant story of Christian Cameron, a keen photographer whose works were largely lost during the war, adds to its historical significance, making it an intriguing site for tourists and researchers alike.
