Asian Art Museum (former Main Library building)

Housed since 2003 in a neoclassical building that was San Francisco's Main Library, the Asian Art Museum contains a collection of more than 18,000 works spanning millennia of Asian art. The building's Beaux-Arts architecture was repurposed to accommodate gallery spaces and special exhibitions when the museum relocated from its previous site. The museum's move and adaptation of the historic civic building is a prominent example of institutional reuse in the Civic Center area.
