Woolworth Building

Designed by Cass Gilbert and completed in 1913, the Woolworth Building was the world's tallest building until 1930 and is noted for its Gothic Revival terracotta façade. Nicknamed the 'Cathedral of Commerce,' the tower combined early steel-frame skyscraper technology with ornate historicist decoration and a highly finished public lobby. The building remains a landmark of Lower Manhattan's early skyscraper era and an enduring example of decorative high-rise design.
