Kingman and Heritage Islands (man-made river islands)

Kingman and Heritage Islands in the Anacostia River were largely formed from dredged material, fill, and river-engineering projects during the early 20th century rather than being wholly natural river islands. Kingman Island began to take shape from dredge spoils around the 1910s and was later shaped into parkland and wildlife habitat, while Heritage Island is an adjacent constructed landform. These islands are notable examples of engineered landforms within the District's riverine geography.
