Lone Mountain cemetery removals and reinterments (site now USF)

The land now occupied by the University of San Francisco's Lone Mountain campus was formerly the Lone Mountain/Laurel Hill and Calvary cemetery area; in the early 20th century thousands of graves were exhumed and reinterred elsewhere (notably Colma) as San Francisco removed most of its cemeteries. The municipal removal and conversion of cemetery land into residential and institutional uses occurred over several decades beginning in the early 1900s. The former cemetery terrain and relocated burial records document the large-scale transfer of human remains out of central San Francisco.
